An important concept the dissection reinforced for me is that the body works as a continuum. Force is meant to travel through the system, and problems arise when it gets stuck or redirected.

Once the horse has access to the thoracic sling, Pillar Two becomes possible. Weight shift does not begin by pushing weight backward. It begins by asking the horse to push up against the ground through the front legs, lifting the chest between the scapulas.

This upward lift is essential. If we bypass the sling and try to shift weight directly back, we risk straining the lumbar spine and skipping the very structure designed to carry the forehand.

Only when the shoulders are free, the sling is responsive, and the horse can push upward without resistance does it make sense for weight to gradually shift back. Over time, as the haunches develop the strength to bend and accept load, the system can redistribute weight without collapse or compensation.

If the shoulders are blocked, no amount of strength behind can move energy through.

The dense fascial bridge between the gluteus medius and the longissimus dorsi is designed to transmit force forward through the body. The fibers of the gluteus medius interdigitate directly into the fascia of the longissimus, creating a powerful connection that continues into the cervical spine.

When this relationship is functioning well, the hind end doesn’t just “push the back up.” Instead, the gluteus medius can engage concentrically while the longissimus responds eccentrically, allowing the back to elevate without bracing.

But if the thoracic sling is collapsing, that transmission has nowhere to go. The bridge still exists, but the system compensates. The longissimus shifts toward concentric contraction, the back hollows, and power that should move through the body gets absorbed or resisted instead.

When the thoracic sling is functioning in a healthy way, the pectoral muscles become active as stabilizers. They support the trunk between the limbs but they also act as adductors, and help the horse organize and stabilize the forelimbs in preparation for the next layer of work.
