Anatomy in Motion — Part 3
Once the horse has access to the thoracic sling and can organize lift through the shoulders, Pillar Three introduces controlled abduction.
As the horse abducts, they stabilize through the adductors and create lateral organization through the shoulder girdle. This allows the scapula to move more freely on the thorax instead of being braced against it. When the shoulders can organize this way, the thoracic sling can maintain lift, and the lower cervical spine is no longer being dragged down into the chest.
In practical terms, abduction doesn’t just help the horse balance on a bend or maintain spinal alignment. It creates space for the scapula to glide, for the ribs to swing, for the cervical vertebrae to reorganize, and for potentially compressed nerve pathways to experience relief.
This is where the conversations around the brachial plexus come back into focus. Posture either preserves space for nerves, vessels, and muscles or it compresses them. When the lower neck and sling lose integrity, everything downstream is affected.
Seen through this lens, Pillar Three isn’t an endpoint. It’s a continuation of the conversation started in Pillar One and Two. Each layer builds on the one before it.
When a horse can organize posture, lift, and controlled abduction statically, taking those qualities into movement becomes the natural next step. At that point, forward motion doesn’t add chaos, it reveals whether balance can be maintained dynamically.

Why This Matters to Me
Seeing these structures so clearly during the dissection gave me a deeper appreciation for how intelligent and interdependent the system really is. It reinforced that dysfunction often comes from a loss of access somewhere along the chain whether from chronic muscle tension, injury, long-held compensatory patterns, or prolonged stress that narrows the horse’s available options.
Sometimes that access can be restored through movement itself. Other times, the nervous system needs additional input before movement becomes available again. Modalities that address chronic tension or create space can help reopen doors that movement alone can’t initially reach.
What feels essential to me, especially in the context of ridden work, is that our training and movement practices respect the anatomy we’re working with. When movement supports the body’s design rather than asking it to work against itself, strength, balance, and longevity become natural outcomes.
