Anatomy in Motion — Part 1
Seeing the body from the inside changes how you think about movement. Every movement practice carries an assumption about how the body works; some support the body’s design, while others unknowingly work against it.
The Balance Through Movement Method continues to resonate with me because of how closely its principles align with the anatomy itself. After seeing these structures during the dissection, the “why” behind the work became even clearer. Posture, lift, and spinal integrity aren’t just training concepts, they’re anatomical necessities.
Pillar One: Posture Is About Access
When the head is carried high in a way that drops the base of the neck, access to the thoracic sling is compromised almost immediately. The sternum drops, the stance narrows, the elbows rotate medially, and muscles like the brachiocephalicus and scalenes become dominant. In this posture, the sling cannot fully engage, and the body organizes itself around tension rather than support. There's also a nervous system component to this posture, but I'll leave that for another post.
Asking the head to lower until we see the cervical trapezius begin to fill in, and the brachiocephalicus soften creates the opportunity for the thoracic sling to participate. Care is taken to stack the forelimbs under the shoulder, perpendicular to the ground, rather than pulled back under the chest with the balance tipping forward.
Once that access is available, extension at the atlanto-occipital joint is prioritized.
For axial rotation to travel down the spine, the horse must be able to find extension at the AO joint. That small amount of freedom allows the lower jaw to slide subtly under the wing of the atlas. This lateral translation may look insignificant, but without it, rotation through the rest of the spine is blocked before it ever begins.
Only when the head and neck can organize this way does it make sense to explore shape. From here, a gentle oscillation between the shoulders, left bend, then right bend, allows the horse to experiment with weight transfer, explore balance, and find the middle.
