What is Somatic Education?

Movement alone can’t always reach or resolve compensation patterns especially when chronic tension has been held in the nervous system for a long time.

In cases like those, modalities that address chronic muscle contraction or create space at key junctions in the body are hugely beneficial.

Equine Hanna Somatics is an incredibly powerful tool when applied correctly but it is often misunderstood and frequently oversimplified. To understand why it works, we first need to clarify what somatics actually is.

When most people hear the word somatics, they associate it with bodywork in the traditional sense: sensory input, manipulating tissue, or mechanically changing posture.

But Thomas Hanna redefined the word ‘soma’ to describe the body as experienced from within: the living body shaped by emotion, habit, injury, patterning, training history, and survival reflexes.

Over time, those reflexes can become stuck, and the nervous system begins holding certain muscles in chronic, unconscious contraction.

This is called motor-sensory amnesia. The brain forgets how to relax the muscles it once controlled.

Somatic education is powerful because instead of changing the horse’s body for them, we help their brain remember how to do it itself. It moves beyond the body as a mechanical structure and emphasizes internal awareness, sensation, and voluntary movement.

There are three primary techniques used in Equine Hanna Somatics each acting as an entry point for restoring awareness and control.

1. Means-Whereby

Adapted from the Alexander Technique, this is a gentle approach where the practitioner creates the movement for the horse.

The horse does not initiate the movement, and there is no motor output from the brain. It’s used sparingly and meant to give the horse an idea of what’s possible. It offers a suggestion that the nervous system can recognize and eventually reproduce on its own.

2. Kinetic Mirroring

This technique brings the origin and insertion of a muscle closer together, triggering a spinal cord level reflex that temporarily lengthens the muscle.

Many hands-on bodywork modalities activate this reflex, which is why we sometimes see dramatic changes immediately after a session.

However, because kinetic mirroring does not involve voluntary motor control, those changes do not always last. It helps prepare the system, but it does not re-educate it.

3. Voluntary Pandiculation

This is the foundation and defining feature of Equine Hanna Somatics.

Pandiculation is the naturally occurring reflexive contraction and slow release you see when a horse stretches after resting. EHS uses this same nervous system process intentionally, guiding the horse to voluntarily contract and release specific muscle groups.

While all beings involuntarily pandiculate, spontaneous stretches may not access the muscle groups that have gone “offline,” and they do not happen frequently enough to counteract the constant stress and tension horses experience in domestic life.

Voluntary pandiculation matters because it brings the highest level of nervous system engagement. It involves both the excitation and inhibition impulses sent from the voluntary motor cortex during concentric and eccentric muscle contraction. That slow, controlled return to neutral, the eccentric phase, is the most important part. It is what resets resting muscle tone and allows the system to return to homeostasis.

Tension is never random.

It is an intelligent adaptation shaped by experience, environment, and necessity.

Through Equine Hanna Somatics, we give the horse a way to voluntarily reorganize those patterns and restore the internal harmony that allows them to move, rest, and exist without bracing against their own body.
