A striking visual for me during the dissection was getting to see the relationship between the gluteus medius and the longissimus dorsi.

These two structures are intimately connected through a dense, continuous fascial bridge. Unlike most muscles that are separated by fascial layers designed to slide and glide, this connection is built for transmission.

The fibers of the gluteus medius interdigitate directly into the fascia of the longissimus dorsi, and that continuity carries forward all the way into the insertion points on the cervical spine. This relationship allows the hind end, back, and thoracic sling to communicate through tissue meant to transfer force.

What surprised me most was the sheer thickness of the gluteus medius, but when you understand its role within the larger system, it makes sense. When the glutes are doing their job, they allow the back to engage through eccentric contraction.

This distinction matters.

When the longissimus dorsi contracts concentrically, it extends the spine and contributes to a hollowed back. However, when it can engage and elongate, modulating tone through eccentric contraction rather than locking down, it becomes part of a system that allows elevation instead of resistance. That possibility begins in the hind end, and the concentric contraction of the gluteus medius plays a key role in making it available.

The gluteus medius is also part of a coordinated conversation between other muscles that must alternate between stability and mobility. Within this system, the gluteal muscles each have a specific job.

The middle glute abducts the limb and extends the hip.

The superficial glute also abducts the limb, but flexes the hip.

They are linked by a broad sheet of fascia and designed to alternate roles: one shortening while the other lengthens, one stabilizing while the other mobilizes. This rhythmic exchange between concentric and eccentric contraction is what allows power without rigidity.

Seeing these relationships so clearly made me reflect on how chronic muscle contraction, injury, or long-held movement patterns shape the way the entire system functions and compensates. The body adapts the only way it can, even when that adaptation comes at a cost.

It reinforced for me that when a horse struggles, the answer isn’t to hold them in a shape or trap energy between aids. Problems are rarely solved by adding more pressure. What matters to me is finding the root cause of dysfunction and supporting the horse in regaining access to their own body.
