Myofascial Lines - How tension travels through the body

Myofascia refers to muscle fibers supported and organized by fascial wrappings, which then connect into broader myofascial chains throughout the body. These chains help distribute load, support posture, and coordinate movement from one region to another.

Fascia is not a passive tissue. It’s richly innervated and in constant communication with the nervous system. Nerves travel through fascial layers, and when fascia is placed under long-term tension, it can lose its ability to glide. This can irritate nerves, distort proprioceptive input, and eventually inhibit muscle function or contribute to atrophy.

At the poll and upper cervical region, several key myofascial lines intersect.

The Deep Ventral Line (DVL) connects the base of the cranium, ventral capital muscles, and longus coli down through the cervical spine and into the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Tension along this line can influence head tilt, cervical stiffness, breathing mechanics, and overall visceral comfort. Neurologically, the DVL is significant because the vagus nerve travels within and alongside these ventral fascial structures, linking posture to parasympathetic regulation.

The DVL also plays a stabilizing role at the cervicothoracic junction, a transition zone where the cervical spine meets the thoracic spine. Here, the S curve of the neck transitions to extension increasing compressive forces. The longus coli and scalenus muscles help stabilize this region and also form part of the cranial thoracic outlet.

In this same region, nerves that form the brachial plexus pass between the scalenus muscles. When tension builds in these muscles or the surrounding fascia, it can influence nerve supply to the forelimbs. This helps explain why issues originating at the neck can sometimes show up as front limb asymmetries, altered stride mechanics, or unexplained movement limitations.

Taken together, these connections help us see the poll not as an isolated joint or a “head position,” but as a central relay point where posture, nervous system regulation, and movement patterns converge.

And this is only part of the story. The dorsal fascial system adds another layer of influence, linking the poll to the spine, the hind limbs, and the way force is transmitted through the body. That’s where we’ll go next.
