Liberty Training

Liberty training not only facilitates relaxation and a deeper connection with our horses, it also promotes self-carriage. This technique gives the horses complete control over their own bodies. Without the use of ropes or other external devices to push or pull them into frame, they are accountable for their own balance and posture and have the freedom to self organize.

Liberty is a discipline all on it’s own but it’s also a great foundation for ridden work. Basic body control, desensitization, saddle introduction as well as more advanced concepts like collection can all be taught a liberty ensuring that the horses truly understand and choose to participate. Bridle-less riding, liberty off a ridden horse and tricks like the rear and lay down are all in the realm of possibilities. One of my favorite things about liberty training is the horses are free to express themselves along the way. It’s about acceptance not just tolerance.

“For what the horse does under compulsion is done without understanding; and there is no beauty in it either, anymore than if one should whip and spur a dancer”
